The Internet of Things (IoT) is a well discussed topic these days. According to a report from McKinsey Global, the economic impact of IoT on factories, retail, work sites, offices and homes could total as much as £3.55 trillion by 2025. In this article we show you how IoT plays an important role in smart buildings and how big data can turn a building into a smart building.

There are still major steps to be taken in the area of sustainability, certainly if you realize that no less than 42 percent of the world's energy is used by buildings. Implementation of new technologies in offices contributes to more efficient workplaces and a more sustainable organization. But how can you use new techniques to make buildings more efficient and sustainable? Let’s take a closer look at the combination of the IoT technologies and big data.

Watch here below our interview with Erik Ubels, CTO EDGE Technologies, explaining how EDGE Technologies builds; better, more sustainable and more efficient buildings for the future with insights from data and technology tools.

Manage and analyze data in a Building Management System

IoT technologies enable different sensors to communicate with each other, enabling them to complete a task quickly. These sensors create, process and deliver information to a central command hub that delivers fast databases with raw data. This raw data is recorded in Building Management Systems (BMS). Managing Big Data without a good analyzing tool is fairly impossible, since an overload of data is easily created. Fortunately, the BMS are usually equipped with good dashboards in which you get a clear view on the data.

The data analytics are very useful: it can help you to get clear insights and to make smart decisions to optimize the workplace. Furthermore, you will be able to discover problems and deviations at an early stage and therefore take action quickly. Without the combination of IoT and the analyzed data it could be that a problem only comes to light after it gets out of control!

Detect errors earlier and optimize your building to economize

Error detection and building optimization are the two main methods to save time and money and application ensures that the initial investment in the IoT and the BMS tool is quickly recouped. Besides, imagine the time that you could save while managing your building from a smart application.

The possibility to do this enables new potentials in terms of data analytics and applications development, the most obvious one being the ability to scale up seamlessly from one smart building to several, in the direction of smart areas and smart cities.
